The Chicago Smart Lighting Project is an outdoor lighting modernization initiative designed to improve the quality and reliability of Chicago’s outdoor lighting. In addition to a large scale conversion of the City’s existing High Pressure Sodium lighting to LED technology, the Project will include a lighting management system and targeted repair and/or replacement of poles and wiring to enhance system reliability.
The Chicago Infrastructure Trust, in coordination with the City of Chicago and the Chicago Park District, has launched a major initiative to upgrade more than 270,000 of the city’s street, alley and park lights to more reliable and higher-quality lighting. The Chicago Smart Lighting Project seeks to improve safety and quality-of-life in neighborhoods across Chicago by replacing nearly all of the city’s outdated and inefficient High Pressure Sodium (HPS) lamps. Additionally, the project anticipates improving the City’s responsiveness to outages with a lighting control network that will provide real-time updates when outages occur. The project will be one of the largest municipal lighting modernization programs in the country.
The procurement process has been finalized and the contract, along with the ordinance to initiate the Smart Lighting Project has been passed by Chicago’s City Council on April 20th, 2017. The contract is now available on the City of Chicago’s Vendor, Contract and Payment database, which can be accessed here.
